EducationUniversity of Washington - graduated summa cum laude in 2003 with degrees in Linguistics and Psychology
Rutgers University - completed some coursework towards a PhD in English Literature from 2007-2008
University of Hawaii at Manoa - Master's in Second Language Studies (specialization in Language Education); graduated 2017
I will also be starting the PhD program in Second Language Studies at the University of Hawaii in autumn 2017.
ExperienceI have 10+ years of tutoring experience, two years of experience teaching English as a Second Language, have a master's degree in language education, and have even won a National Tutor of the Year award for my work with one education company.
I will be in Mannheim during the month of June and will be accepting students during that time. I am primarily interested in teaching English, although I also have years of experience teaching math as well. (The lessons would just have to be in English!) I am able to continue lessons online after I go back to Hawaii.
I tutor very interactively, and focus on customizing my tutoring for the student's particular needs. I can help with homework, study skills, or enrichment activities to go beyond the classroom. I particularly enjoy helping students discover that they actually CAN be good at the subject that is challenging them, provided they work hard and ask lots of questions.
I am also one of those rare individuals who love standardized tests, and I have tutoring experience in the SAT, ACT, GRE, GMAT, LSAT, ISEE, and SSAT. I have tutored all components of each of the tests, and have scored at least in the 95th percentile on all of them.
Specific test scores:
SAT - 800 Verbal, 790 Math; have repeatedly scored perfect on recent practice tests
ACT - repeatedly scored perfect on recent practice tests
GRE - 170 Verbal, 169 Quantitative, 6 AWA
LSAT - 174 on practice test
HobbiesLearning languages is a hobby of mine. I am currently relearning German after a 10 year break, and can also speak a decent amount of Korean, as well as bits and pieces of other languages. I will be starting my PhD at the University of Hawaii this autumn. Living in Hawaii has given me a chance to meet people from so many different countries and cultures, and I am very happy to be able to call it home for a while!
